About Spices

  • Definition
Spices are usually made from dried seeds, fruits, bark, or rhizomes of plants. They can also come from other plant parts, such as roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.

    Uses
Spices are used to season and preserve food, and can also be used in medicine, religious rituals, cosmetics, or perfume production.

    History
Spices have been used for thousands of years and were once a source of great power and wealth. The word "spice" comes from the Latin word species, which means "merchandise" or "wares".

    Storage
Spices should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from light and air. They can be kept fresh longer in the refrigerator, and almost indefinitely if frozen.

    Flavor
Spices lose their flavor over time, especially if exposed to light and air. To get the most flavor from whole spices, you can heat them by dry-roasting or lightly frying them. You can also grind the spices to enhance their flavor.
